Stats SA reports 0.5% Q4 increase in SA employment
Stats SA’s quarterly employment statistics report reveals a 0.5% increase in the number of people employed in South Africa from September 2022 to December 2022, with a total of 9,968,000 individuals employed. However, the report also notes a 0.9% year-on-year decrease in total employment from December 2021 to December 2022 as reported by Jacarandafm.
Part-time jobs showed a significant increase of 42,000 (4.9%) compared to a 6,000 (0.1%) increase for full-time jobs.
The report highlights that the growth was mainly due to trade, business services, and mining increases, while construction, manufacturing, and electricity industries marked decreases.
Analysts have warned of the impact of load shedding on the construction and manufacturing industries, which rely heavily on uninterrupted power supply, and predict that planned power cuts could worsen during the coming winter months.
