In an ongoing court case, the State denied the Joburg Highway assault victims were drunk. The incident was caught on video, showing members of Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s security detail assaulting three men. This footage led to several charges, including assault, malicious property damage, and the pointing of a firearm, as per EWN.

One of the VIP protection unit officers defended their actions, stating they were subduing people driving recklessly, not assaulting them. The State prosecutor, Elize le Roux, highlighted that the accused acted in concert during the incident and disregarded the country’s laws.
