stage 4 and 6 power cuts for 12 July 2023

Eskom, South Africa’s power utility, has announced stage 4 and 6 power cuts for 12 July 2023. Stage 4 load shedding will be implemented until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by stage 6 power cuts until 5 a.m. on Thursday. Per SABC News, these power cuts result from losing additional generating units overnight, extensive use of Open Gas Cycle Turbines, and the inability to replenish pumped storage dam levels. This pattern of power cuts will continue daily until further notice, posing ongoing challenges to the country’s electricity supply.

Meanwhile, City Power in Johannesburg highlights the importance of Eskom’s smart meter project, which is currently rolling out in select city areas. The project aims to reduce energy demand and improve efficiency. One notable feature of smart meters is the ability for customers to control their geysers using smartphones remotely. This development marks a shift from purchasing electricity units or tokens from stores or garages and manually inputting them into meters. Eskom will likely complete the smart meter project transition by November 2024.

As Eskom grapples with maintaining a stable power supply, the implementation of stage 4 and 6 power cuts for 12 July 2023 underscores the need for sustainable solutions to address the country’s energy demands. The smart meter project represents a step towards greater energy management and efficiency. However, significant challenges lie ahead, and Eskom and other stakeholders must navigate these obstacles to ensure a reliable and sustainable power supply for South Africa’s future.
