South Africans showed support for Palestinians

Hundreds of South Africans showed support for Palestinians in Johannesburg amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. According to Africanews, they gathered on the streets on Wednesday. Protesters highlighted decades of oppression faced by Palestinians, with some questioning the use of their religion to undermine Palestinian rights.

Pamela Ngubane, a protester, shared her perspective. “I did more and more research and I came to the conclusion that not only have I been lied to, and spreading myself, but my religion was being used to undermine the rights of the Palestinian people.”

Demonstrators at the United States consulate criticised weapon supplies to Israel. They called for the Israeli ambassador to South Africa to be expelled. A similar protest occurred in Cape Town, demanding an end to violence.

These demonstrations were organised by the pro-Palestine group BDS. BDS advocates for the boycott of Israeli products, disinvestment, and sanctions against Israel. The Jewish community in South Africa announced plans for solidarity events supporting Israel.

South Africa’s government called for an immediate cessation of violence between Israel and Palestine on Sunday.
