The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has discussed with the Department of Social Development and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) to address the recent delays in beneficiary payments.

According to EWN, these discussions come in response to a complaint filed by the Democratic Alliance regarding the payment disruptions experienced earlier this month. Pensioners and individuals with disabilities faced significant challenges accessing their grant payments through Sassa’s Postbank payment system during this period.

The cause of the delay is believed to be related to a dispute over Postbank’s migration to a new software system, which has resulted in a legal battle with its former supplier.

SAHRC spokesperson Wisani Baloyi stressed that state entities ensure vulnerable groups receive monthly payments without disruption. The meeting focused on various issues, including the specifics of the switching glitches encountered by Postbank and the potential impact on the next round of social grant disbursements.

Baloyi further announced that the SAHRC will meet with Postbank to receive updates on plans to ensure beneficiaries receive their payments promptly in the upcoming month.
