Learner Pays Tribute to Siya Kolisi with Honorary Gesture
A Siya Kolisi artwork crafted by East Rand School of the Arts (ERSA) learner Siphesihle Hlatshwayo (17) has been making waves on social media over the past month.
In the latest creation by Siphesihle, he has turned heads with his portrait of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, which quickly gained recognition from the local community as it went viral on social media.
Siphesihle’s intent behind the artwork was to pay homage to Siya Kolisi for his remarkable leadership as the captain of the Springboks.
In his own words, “What I learned from him is that our backgrounds should not hinder our aspirations and dreams. Meeting him in person is a dream I fervently hold to my heart as he stands as my ultimate rugby idol.”
This attention isn’t Siphesihle’s first time in the spotlight for his artistic talents. Last year, he garnered attention in the Benoni City Times for his portrait of the late Ricky Rick, a famous hip-hop star Siphesihle admired greatly.
Siphesihle, a Grade 12 learner, dedicated two days to perfecting his masterpiece of Siya Kolisi. He explained that he created a portrait of Ricky Rick to keep the musician’s spirit alive through his art.
