Six Months and Counting: Joburg Water Yet to Resolve Road Repair

Published

on

Residents in Gallo Manor, Sandton, are growing increasingly frustrated with Joburg Water’s lack of action in fixing the state of their road, which has been left without proper reinstatement. The issue was initially reported on November 16 last year, and despite follow-ups in February, March, and April of this year, no progress has been made.

Fatime Jogee, a resident, expressed the community’s dissatisfaction, stating that they had been waiting six months for the reinstatement to be completed. As law-abiding citizens who pay their dues, they are unsure where to turn for assistance. Resorting to the media, they hope to gain Joburg Water’s attention and prompt action.

Jogee emphasised that the entire community is affected by the unfinished road, especially during rainfall when the untarred portion becomes difficult to navigate. Lesley King, another resident, shared her frustration in contacting Joburg Water numerous times without any response or resolution.

The Sandton Chronicle contacted Joburg Water on June 1 regarding the reinstatement at Gallo Manor. Nolwazi Dhlamini, the spokesperson for Joburg Water, explained that while they are not directly responsible for tar reinstatements, their reinstatement contractor handles such tasks. She acknowledged that this specific reinstatement is in their queue but did not provide a specific timeline for completion.

Dhlamini highlighted that until mid-last year, the Johannesburg Roads Agency was responsible for reinstatements. However, a decision was made to transfer this responsibility to Joburg Water, encompassing tarmac, paved, concrete, and stone surfaces for excavations related to water and sanitation infrastructure repairs. She also mentioned the backlog of reinstatements across the city, which has resulted in varying completion times for different projects.

Joburg Water acknowledged the frustrations and assured the public that they are working tirelessly, internally and with service providers, to address the backlog and complete the reinstatements as soon as possible.
