A group of sham metro police officers has been targeting motorists on the N4 Platinum Highway and R80 Soshanguve off-ramp, leaving the TMPD concerned. Reports indicate that these impostors, dressed in full TMPD uniforms and driving a marked vehicle with blue lights and sirens, are involved in robbery and hijacking incidents, particularly against truckers.

TMPD spokesperson Superintendent Isaac Mahamba has expressed the department’s belief that this unit is a sham, and an investigation into this alarming situation is underway. Mahamba explained that the suspected bogus TMPD officers had been stopping trucks along the highway and driving a kombi marked as a TMPD vehicle.

A recent incident on October 9 involved two male suspects in TMPD uniforms who pulled over a truck by instructing the driver to check a supposed faulty brake light. After the driver complied, the suspects brandished a firearm and asked the driver to move to their kombi. Subsequently, the suspects drove off with both vehicles, leaving the driver unharmed at the side of the road.

Mahamba has stressed that these individuals cannot be considered genuine TMPD officers. The department is committed to thoroughly investigating this matter. In the meantime, Mahamba has urged the public to exercise caution when being stopped by police officers. He advised motorists to request appointment certificates from officers if any suspicion arises during a stop.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time fake TMPD police have been reported in the Tshwane area. Similar criminals posed as police officers and wore metro police uniforms last October. However, their vehicle was unmarked but equipped with blue lights. These impostors were responsible for robbing and hijacking motorists, particularly in Centurion and along the R511 from Diepsloot leading to Hartbeespoort.

Motorists are encouraged to report such crimes to their nearest police station or contact the TMPD at 012 358 7095/7096. All information received will be treated with the utmost confidentiality to aid in apprehending the sham metro police impersonators.
