Wierdapark Residents Frustrated by Persistent Sewage Leaks

Sewage leaks in Wierdapark

Sewage leaks in Wierdapark have left its residents exasperated. The area has been marred by frequent power outages, water leaks, uncollected waste, and, most notably, persistent sewage leaks.

Service delivery across Tshwane has been severely impacted since the start of an illegal municipal employee strike on July 24. Ward councillors have been grappling with limited resources, attempting to address the many problems in various parts of Centurion.

Liza Vorster, Chairperson of the Wierdapark Residents Association (WPRA), recently penned a letter to city officials, urgently highlighting the numerous concerns affecting her constituents.

She described the current state of Wierdapark as unpleasant, with sewage flowing down the streets and a constant foul smell permeating the air. These sewage leaks not only jeopardize the health and safety of residents but also pose a significant risk to local water resources, including the Hennops River.

There have been numerous reports of sewage leaks in several locations within Wierdapark, including Penguin and Gannet Crescent, Susan and Badenhorst/Hendrik, Chris Hougaard, Springbok, Eland, Theuns van Niekerk/Koedoe, and Cotie Avenue. Volunteer plumbers have addressed some of these leaks.

Residents have initiated a fundraising effort through the WPRA to hire private plumbers equipped with heavy jets to tackle these persistent drainage issues in response to the dire situation.

The strike’s repercussions extend beyond sewage leaks, impacting other aspects of infrastructure, such as bent street poles and leaking mini substations. Ongoing power problems in Wierdapark and slow repair turnaround times exacerbate residents’ frustrations.

Vorster acknowledged the challenges faced by ward councillors who often struggled to obtain or share information for the safety of repair teams. However, she highlighted that the lack of communication from the city regarding service delivery and repair timelines was unacceptable.

As of publication, Rekord was awaiting a response from the metro regarding these ongoing issues.
