SAPS Seizes R66M in Counterfeit Goods in Bold Johannesburg Raid

In a decisive strike against crime, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and its partners conducted a major operation in Johannesburg on November 26, seizing counterfeit and illicit goods worth over R66 million.

The coordinated effort involved several units, including the National Counterfeit Goods Unit, the Gauteng Provincial Counterfeit Goods Unit, Operational Response Services, and Crime Intelligence. Together, they confiscated more than 190,000 items, ranging from counterfeit clothing and cosmetics to dangerous pharmaceuticals.

Among the seized goods were toxic skin-lightening products and unregulated poisons, posing serious health risks to the public. Officials from the Department of Agriculture helped identify these hazardous items, ensuring they are removed from potential circulation.

The operation also led to the arrest of four Malawian nationals for violating the Immigration Act. Authorities suspect the individuals were connected to the storage and distribution of these illicit goods.

“This successful takedown demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting South African consumers and ensuring the integrity of our economy,” said Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk, SAPS spokesperson.

This raid is part of a broader crackdown on counterfeit goods in South Africa. Counterfeit items not only endanger consumers but also disrupt legitimate businesses and hinder economic stability. SAPS and its partners, including SARS, Customs, and private security companies, are determined to dismantle these illegal networks.

The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspected counterfeit goods to local authorities. Together, these efforts aim to create a safer and more prosperous South Africa.
