A search of an address in Alberton led to the discovery of shipping containers containing bags of zircon. While the recovery of the zircon is a significant achievement, further investigations are still underway. The police are investigating to find the zircon’s source and its intended destination.
Zircon is a semi-precious mineral commonly found in igneous rocks, especially granite and felsic igneous rocks. It is also a frequent component of most sands. The mineral can survive in sedimentary deposits due to its hardness, endurance, and chemical inertness. It has been used in ceramics, refractory materials, and nuclear fuel rods.
