Sandton sees an anti-Africa Energy Week conference protest
More than 1,000 individuals, representing a diverse coalition of community-based organizations, activists, and community members affected by extractive projects, have convened in Sandton to demonstrate against the African Energy Chamber (AEC) and the upcoming African Energy Week (AEW) conference in Cape Town scheduled for next month.
The demonstration, which took place today on October 8, commenced at Sandton Central Park, situated at the junction of Grayston and Sandton Drives, proceeding towards the African Energy Chamber located at the intersection of Katherine and West Streets in Sandton.
The protesters are advocating for an end to the AEC’s advocacy for fossil fuel projects, particularly the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).
The marchers intend to march to Ivor Ichikowitz’ Paramount Group, the US Consulate, and the Sasol headquarters.
Key Demands of the Protesters:
- The immediate cancellation of African Energy Week
- African governments should Boycott African Energy Week and sever ties with its host, the African Energy Chamber
- African leaders must oppose the expansion of fossil fuels on the continent and actively work towards a fair transition to renewable energy
- Reparations should be provided for the environmental harm caused by fossil fuel extraction
