Samsung Unveils Fifth-Generation Foldables Series

Samsung, the South Korean electronics giant, has revealed its latest smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5, as part of its foldable portfolio. The launch occurred during the Galaxy Unpacked event, live-streamed from Seoul, Korea, to a local audience in Rosebank, Johannesburg as reported by ITWeb.

The company also introduced the Galaxy Tab S9 series and Galaxy Watch6 series, featuring the Watch6 and Watch6 Classic.

Bumsuk Hong, Samsung Africa’s president and CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to perfecting the Galaxy Z series, with data showing significant growth in the “super-premium” smartphone segment, driven by the increasing popularity of foldable.

Samsung is attentive to user feedback and aims to provide consumers with innovative technology that enhances their connected lifestyles. The CEO highlighted the importance of the African market for the company’s growth, particularly among the young population under 25, who have embraced advanced mobile technologies.

Dr TM Roh, president and head of the Mobile eXperience business at Samsung Electronics, revealed the widespread adoption of foldable smartphones, with expectations of the foldable market surpassing 100 million devices shortly.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 and Galaxy Z Fold5 are now available for pre-order in select markets, with general availability beginning on 18 August. The Z Flip5 is priced at $999, while the Z Fold5 retails at $1,799, but local pricing is yet to be disclosed.

The Z Flip5 features a new flex window design, offering a 6.7-inch open display and a 3.4-inch cover display. The smartphone weighs 187g and is 5G-enabled, equipped with 8GB RAM and storage options of 512GB or 256GB.

The Z Flip5’s camera includes a 10MP selfie camera and a rear dual camera with a 12MP ultrawide camera and 12MP wide-angle camera. It is available in mint, graphite, cream, and lavender colours.

The Z Fold5 is the “lightest” foldable in the series and combines a 7.6-inch main display with a 6.2-inch cover screen. It features wireless charging, two nano SIMs, and one eSIM, and is 5G-enabled with a 4,400mAh dual battery.

The Z Fold5’s camera setup includes the following:

  • A 10MP selfie camera.
  • A 4MP under-display camera.
  • A 12MP ultrawide camera.
  • A 50MP wide-angle camera.
  • A 10MP telephoto camera.

Samsung has also improved the S Pen fold edition for an enhanced writing experience.

In addition to the smartphones, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Watch6 and Galaxy Watch6 Classic, designed to help users build healthier daily and night habits. The smartwatches feature health offerings and have versatile watch faces and new band options to empower users to achieve their goals.

The new Watch6 series offers improved battery life, a thin rotating bezel, and software upgrades. It comes in two sizes and includes health monitoring, making it a convenient tool for daily tracking and improving health and wellness.
