Stakeholders and businesses in the Klipriviersberg precinct expressed concerns about rising crime and bylaw infringements. SOJO Business and Tourism collaborated with Thaba Eco Hotel, Mall of the South, Aspen Nature Estate, Aspen Development Company, Balwin Properties, Panorama Shopping Centre, Imagine Church, and private property owners to address these issues.

Their collective decision was to establish a camera security network, prioritising the safety and security of all residents and visitors in the precinct. Identifying VumaCam as a partner for their SafeCity Initiative, Nicky Vakaloudis, CEO of SOJO Business and Tourism, emphasised the importance of combining private and public law enforcement with CCTV to combat crime. The aim is to expand the network, close hiding spots for criminals, and protect those who cannot protect themselves.

Excitement surrounds the initiative’s implementation in Joburg South, with the installation of SOJO and Vumacam Security Cameras. The FNB Stadium precinct was the first to adopt the project, and Phase 1 is almost complete, with preparations underway for Phase 2. Vakaloudis expressed gratitude to their partners and stakeholders, acknowledging their indispensable support.

The benefits of the SafeCity expansion project encompass closing hiding spots for criminals, safeguarding critical public infrastructure, enhancing safety in recreation areas, connecting private security with the SAPS through the Eyes and Ears (E2 Fusion Centre in Sandton), providing city-wide access to security providers beyond their usual operational areas for crime prevention and investigations, and expediting coverage to protect the vulnerable and under-protected.

SafeCity partners have access to over 7,000 VumaCam cameras, crucial for gaining city-wide situational awareness to understand criminal patterns and aid in crime prevention and investigations. The initiative was conceived to offer a more comprehensive CCTV solution throughout the City of Joburg.

VumaCam has installed cameras across the city in recent years, positively impacting crime prevention and people’s lives. However, gaps in the network still need to be addressed. Thus, SOJO, their partners, and stakeholders have joined forces with VumaCam to close these gaps and strengthen community safety.
