South Africa’s population has increased by 10 million since 2011. The total is now 62 million. Insider Paper reports that this growth shows a 19.8 per cent surge from the 2011 count when the population was 51.8 million.

President Cyril Ramaphosa underscored the significance of this census. It marks the fourth since South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994. He noted that it contributes to a comprehensive body of knowledge that describes the state and progress of the nation.

The 2022 census provides a comprehensive demographic profile of South Africa. It reveals that over 81 per cent of the country’s population identifies as Black Africans. Additionally, 8.1 per cent consider themselves “coloured” or of mixed-race heritage. Approximately 7.3 per cent identify as white. This data is a decline from the 2011 figure of nine per cent. In addition, 2.7 per cent of the population identifies as Indian or Asian descent.

Gauteng emerged as the most populous region. It has more than 15 million residents. It is worth noting that Gauteng and the Western Cape, home to Cape Town, experienced the most substantial influx of new residents.

The census also highlights progress in terms of access to essential services. Nearly all homes in South Africa have access to electricity. More than 80 per cent enjoy access to running water. These developments indicate improved living conditions for the nation’s growing population.
