Alarming increase in violent crimes revealed by crime stats

South Africa has seen a concerning rise in violent crimes, with an average of almost 70 murders per day recorded between January and March this year, according to the latest crime statistics. According to eNCA, most of these murders resulted from arguments, vigilantism, and robberies.

Additionally, there were reports of over 10,500 rape cases during the same period, with KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo witnessing an increase. Police Minister Bheki Cele stressed the need for intensified policing efforts to combat contact crimes and protect human lives.

While reported rape cases in some provinces have decreased, the fight against gender-based violence remains. The South African Police Service is working to arrest perpetrators and engage with communities to address these issues.
