Rise in Property-Related Offenses on the Bluff

Brighton Beach SAPS has expressed growing concern over a surge in criminal activities within their policing jurisdiction. Incidents such as residential break-ins, motor vehicle theft, carjackings, and common robberies have increased.

Corporate communications and liaison officer, Cpt Louise Le Roux, explained that these crimes happen sporadically throughout the day and night, with no specific day of the week showing a higher incidence.

In the nearby Clairwood community, business robberies, truck theft, and cargo theft from trucks have posed significant challenges. These crimes tend to occur predominantly at night.

To enhance citizens’ safety, the station has issued the following recommendations:

  1. Avoid engaging in conversations with strangers in public, as it could distract from potential criminal activities like robbery or kidnapping.
  2. Do not pick up hitchhikers, even if they appear to be a woman with a child.
  3. Stay vigilant of your surroundings, particularly at intersections and traffic lights.
  4. When in public, refrain from using your phone or walking while intoxicated.
  5. If you suspect that you are being followed while on foot, call for help.
  6. Carry a whistle and keep it handy on your belt or in your handbag. In a mall, seek assistance from security if you can’t find them. While in your vehicle, head to the nearest public area or police station. Honk your horn and flash your car’s lights to signal distress.
  7. Pay attention when entering or exiting your vehicle. Have your keys ready when approaching your vehicle, and lock the doors immediately after getting inside.
  8. Exercise caution when placing items in your car’s trunk.
  9. Ensure that your car’s doors are securely locked by checking the handle when locking the vehicle. When activating your car’s alarm system with your remote, make sure you’re facing the vehicle, hear the doors lock, and see the indicator light flash. Wait for 30 seconds before leaving to ensure your locking device remains active.
  10. Conceal valuable items out of plain sight by locking them in the trunk.
  11. Avoid travelling with valuables visible on passenger seats or the floor.
  12. When parking your vehicle, try to position it with the front facing the curb, turn the wheels toward the curb, and lock the steering.
