Last week, the Boksburg Advertiser revealed ongoing investigations by the Boksburg police into a possible motorcycle hijacking syndicate, particularly affecting delivery motorcycles like those of Checkers Sixty60 and Mr D in the area.
While Mr D did not respond to inquiries regarding the situation, the Shoprite Group’s media team addressed the matter, stating, “Security and risk teams continually monitor and combat criminal activities. Necessary apprehensions are made through close collaboration with the SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority.”
The Shoprite Group further emphasised that their operational teams, including contracted drivers, are kept informed of security alerts and updates. All drivers receive training in defensive and anti-hijacking driving techniques and advanced driving skills.
According to Sergeant Ntsako Ledwaba, spokesperson for Boksburg SAPS, detectives are investigating at least nine motorcycle hijackings reported between August and September. Victims lose their vehicles and are robbed of personal items like cell phones and cash. Unlike e-hailing services, the motorcycles used for deliveries belong to the drivers themselves and are not provided by their employers.
The Boksburg areas most affected by these incidents include Plantation, Farrar Park, and Freeway Park. Some operators suspect these crimes may be perpetrated by individuals within the same industry who hijack the motorcycles and sell them to other delivery drivers.
Individuals with information that can aid the police in tracking down the culprits are encouraged to contact the Boksburg SAPS Community Service Centre (CSC) at 011 841 6844/6845 or the Crime Office at 011 841 6843.
