Residents without power after fire ravages Pyramid substation
Parts of Rooiwal, located north of Pretoria, are currently experiencing an electricity outage following a fire that broke out at the Pyramid substation in the early hours of Wednesday, October 2. City emergency services swiftly responded to the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze.
Metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba reported that during the incident, the 132kv Line 1 Bellom-Parktown tripped, leading to power outages in areas including Pretoria North, Wonderboom, Wolmer, Pyramid, Pumulani, Koedoespoort, and parts of Waltloo substations. A team of technicians from the energy and electricity department was immediately dispatched and managed to isolate the fault.
Bokaba further stated that all affected substations, except for the Pyramid substation, have been reconnected. The Pyramid substation will remain offline until repair work is completed. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
As a result of the power supply interruption, only the Rooiwal Sewerage Plant and households surrounding the Pyramid substation are impacted. The city’s technicians are working continuously to restore power to the affected areas.
The estimated time for full restoration will be communicated once the majority of repair work is finalized. Tshwane authorities apologize for any inconvenience caused by this unforeseen situation and reassure affected residents that updates on repair progress will be provided promptly.
Acting mayor, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, confirmed that metro officials are assessing the fire’s damage. Discussions are underway to ensure short-term water relief as the outage has also affected water supply. Residents are advised to stay calm as updates on the water situation will be shared in due course.
