Mackenzie Park North Residents Frustrated with Raw Sewage Stench and Blocked Sewer Lines
The raw sewage stench in Mackenzie Park has residents of Snipe Street accusing the City of Ekurhuleni of neglecting their complaints about blocked sewer lines, affecting their health. The residents have been experiencing overflowing drains, maintenance holes, and sewers for over a month, which they attribute to blocked pipes on the main line. They suspect the illegal mining activities in the area result in blocking the maintenance holes.
When the Benoni City Times visited the area on July 6, they encountered an overwhelming sewer stench upon entering Snipe Street from Main Reef Road. The newspaper noticed sewerage overflowing into the community garden on the corner of Snipe Street and Quail Avenue. Upon inspection, they learned that it was coming from a nearby property, and the homeowner had to bore a hole into the wall fence and insert two pipes to let the sewer out.

The newspaper also visited several properties in the area and noticed drains overflowing with sewer. In contrast, several maintenance holes on Snipe and adjoining streets were covered with faeces, plastic bags, and toilet paper. The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has not responded to the newspaper’s query, only requesting reference numbers from the residents.
The residents urged the CoE to take their complaints seriously and promptly solve them.
