Ramaphosa to visit Hammanskraal – the epicentre of South Africa’s cholera outbreak
President Cyril Ramaphosa will visit Hammanskraal on Thursday, 8 June 2023. The President has expressed deep concern over the devastating cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal as authorities continue their efforts to identify the source of the contaminated water, as per Eyewitness News.
In a significant move, Ramaphosa will personally visit the community in the northern region of Pretoria on Thursday, accompanied by key government officials, including Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink.
The decision to visit comes in the wake of at least 26 reported deaths across the country, with the majority occurring in Hammanskraal. Furthermore, over 130 residents have been treated for this waterborne disease.
While there has been a notable decline in cholera cases in Tshwane, the Health Department has highlighted Hammanskraal as the outbreak’s epicentre, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.

The affected community has eagerly awaited the impending visit by President Ramaphosa. His itinerary will commence at the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant, which has suffered neglect over the past decade, resulting in inadequate water treatment.
Although suspicions were initially raised about the plant’s role in spreading cholera, the National Health Department clarified that all samples tested negative for the bacterium.
President Ramaphosa will engage with local communities. Many expect him to reassure them and outline the government’s proactive measures that it will implement to combat the spread of the disease.
The visit by President Ramaphosa and his high-level delegation signifies a commitment to addressing the cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal and offering support to those affected by this devastating public health crisis.
