Ramaphosa will visit hammanskraal

President Cyril Ramaphosa will visit Hammanskraal. The president personally addressed the cholera outbreak, announcing his visit to the affected area during a press meeting in Mahikeng. The outbreak has cast a sombre cloud over Hammanskraal, claiming the lives of 24 individuals and leaving the community distressed. President Ramaphosa expressed his commitment to tackling the crisis head-on.

He delegated the responsibility of dealing with the outbreak to the Minister of Water and Sanitation and the Minister of Health. These key ministers are working hard with the local municipality to devise practical solutions and implement immediate measures to stop cholera.

Meanwhile, the municipality has recognised the urgent need for infrastructure improvement. A significant portion of the budget has been allocated to revamp the Rooiwal wastewater treatment plant, a vital component in addressing the water-related issues contributing to the outbreak. Mayor Cilliers Brink passionately announced a commitment of R450 million and an additional R150 million annually for the next three years. This substantial investment aims to augment the plant’s capacity, ensuring the community’s reliable, clean water supply.

However, it is essential to note that the waterworks upgrade faced unforeseen delays and setbacks. The contract awarded to CMS, NJR, and Blackhead was cancelled in August due to concerns regarding poor performance. A subsequent forensic investigation revealed irregularities in the contract’s awarding process, underscoring the need for transparency and accountability in such crucial projects.

As President Ramaphosa prepares to visit Hammanskraal, the community eagerly awaits his presence and the actions that he will take to address the cholera outbreak. The empathetic response from the government, coupled with the commitment to improve water infrastructure, instils hope that swift and effective measures will be implemented to alleviate the suffering and safeguard the well-being of the affected residents.
