Ramaphosa has defended the BRICS Summit in SA

President Cyril Ramaphosa has defended the BRICS Summit in South Africa and the country’s engagement in the bloc while advocating for its expansion. According to EWN, Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Sunday night, shedding light on its participation in the summit and broader foreign policy objectives in an increasingly intricate global landscape.

Highlighting the evolving complexity of the world, Ramaphosa underscored that the actions of various power blocs were gradually supplanting multilateralism. This phenomenon has prompted South Africa’s continued involvement in initiatives like BRICS, aimed at fostering cooperation among emerging economies to navigate global challenges collectively.

The president pointed out that over 20 countries, including Iran, Cuba, Argentina, Sudan, and Saudi Arabia, have expressed interest in joining BRICS, emphasising the bloc’s growth and influence expansion potential.

President Ramaphosa meticulously outlined South Africa’s foreign policy to ease concerns ahead of the BRICS Summit, stressing a commitment to non-alignment. He stated, “We have resisted pressure to align ourselves with any one of the global powers or with influential blocs of nations.”

In his address, Ramaphosa showcased South Africa’s diplomatic finesse, highlighting strategic partnerships with nations that may hold differing viewpoints. This approach, he argued, contributes to the nation’s growth while acknowledging the increasingly polarised global landscape.

“Multilateralism is being replaced by the actions of different power blocs, all of which we trade with, invest with, and whose technology we use,” remarked the president.

Ramaphosa also shared that the summit will host more than 30 state heads.

The 15th BRICS Summit, set to commence on Tuesday and conclude on Thursday, offers a platform for the member nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
