Durban Harbour Cocaine Bust – Police Seize R70 Million Worth of Drugs

R70m worth of cocaine at Durban Harbour

The Durban Harbour police, in collaboration with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) in KwaZulu-Natal, successfully recovered a staggering R70m worth of cocaine at Durban Harbour.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe revealed that the Durban Harbour police had closely monitored a vessel travelling from Brazil to South Africa over the past month.

“Before the vessel reached the Port of Durban, our members intercepted it and swiftly assembled various units and resources for a search-and-seizure operation on the targeted containers,” she stated.

Mathe further disclosed that the police confiscated 200 blocks of cocaine, cleverly concealed within 20-litre paint containers.

General Bheki Cele, the Minister of Police, lauded the meticulous investigative efforts and stressed the commitment of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to assert the authority of the state.

“We are enhancing our response and strategy to combat these criminal syndicates,” Cele emphasized.

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola highlighted the momentum building for the National Safer Festive Season Operations, celebrating the interception of illicit activities. He also mentioned a seizure of R75 million counterfeit goods in Cape Town.

“The fight against crime, particularly organized crime syndicates, is intensifying. Our focus now is to investigate the origin and destination of these drugs, ensuring that arrests are made,” Masemola concluded.
