Court faces challenges sentencing quadriplegic ex-cop who murdered Tembisa Hospital nurse

A quadriplegic ex-cop convicted of murdering his wife, who worked at Tembisa Hospital in Johannesburg, is still awaiting sentencing.

According to Briefly News, The Gauteng High Court is currently facing the challenge of finding a prison facility capable of accommodating the specific needs of the quadriplegic former police officer.

Lucky Mudau, a former Joburg police officer, committed the heinous act of murdering his wife, Lebo Monene, in the parking lot of Tembisa Hospital in February 2022 before attempting to take his own life, according to PowerFM.

Although Mudau survived the shooting, he was left paralyzed and has since been unable to perform basic tasks independently, relying on diapers and catheters for personal care. His quadriplegia, classified as C5, has left him without using his upper and lower body, necessitating a 24-hour caregiver. Rehabilitation prospects for Mudau are non-existent.

The delay in Mudau’s sentencing arises from the lack of accessibility in South African prisons for quadriplegic inmates. Testifying in court, Ntombentsha Ndamase, the deputy manager of nursing at Pretoria’s Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre, revealed that the facility only provides primary healthcare services, leaving the court uncertain about the existence of a suitable prison for Mudau, as reported by News24.

Judge William Karam expressed frustration over the lack of clarity. He requested a statement from a senior-level official regarding the availability of a prison that can accommodate quadriplegic inmates.

South Africans have weighed in on the matter, with opinions varying from advocating for imprisonment to suggesting house arrest for Mudau. The sentencing delay has sparked strong reactions on social media, highlighting concerns about the former cop’s fate.

As the court awaits a resolution regarding suitable prison accommodation for the quadriplegic ex-cop, the case raises questions about the accessibility and provisions available within the South African prison system for individuals with severe disabilities.
