Pta north ‘extortionists’ to appear in court
Six suspects linked to a widespread extortion scheme are set to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on September 27.
The arrests follow a meticulous intelligence-driven sting operation conducted by Tshwane police on September 26.
The operation targeted individuals accused of coercing local business owners and residents into paying monthly fees.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan Van Dyk said the suspects allegedly demanded R500 per month from their victims, threatening business closures and using intimidation tactics for non-payment.
“These coercive practices have caused distress among community members, prompting law enforcement to take action after thorough investigations and intelligence gathering,” he said.
Van Dyk said the coordinated takedown occurred in Akasia and Soshanguve, where officers executed the arrests without incident.
“The suspects are believed to be connected to multiple extortion cases reported in Soshanguve Extensions, Block XX, and Kgabalatsane in the North West Province.
Major-General Samuel Thine, the District Commissioner of Tshwane, praised police for their swift and effective response.
“This operation underscores our commitment to combatting crime and protecting our community.”
Residents are encouraged to report any incident of extortion.
