A protest in Diepkloof, south of Johannesburg, has prompted authorities to advise motorists to steer clear of the N1 north and N12 east split at the Diepkloof interchange.

According to SowetanLIVE, Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla stated this Wednesday morning that residents of Diepkloof Hostel in Soweto had barricaded the roads, demanding improved essential services.

While there were no reports of injuries, the situation remained tense, leading to the deployment of JMPD officers to monitor the protest.

Fihla urged drivers to exercise caution and seek alternative routes, such as the Golden Highway or Ben Naude Drive in Diepkloof, to avoid the affected area.

The protest follows last week’s incident in which a truck transporting milk was looted and set ablaze by demonstrators in the same vicinity.
