Protea South family wants answes after boy dies from food poison

A Protea South family is grappling with grief and seeking answers after the tragic death of 14-year-old Kwanda Mzazana. Kwanda is the latest child to die under mysterious circumstances, suspected of food poisoning. The incident occurred in Soweto, and the grieving family is demanding clarity.

On Monday, Kwanda fell critically ill after reportedly consuming a packet of chips from a local foreign-owned shop. According to his family, he had been in good health earlier that day, sharing meals with everyone at home. He left to play and returned to bathe but was found on the floor, foaming at the mouth and bleeding.

Desperate to save him, the family rushed Kwanda to the Chaiwelo clinic, where medical staff suspected food poisoning. However, their efforts were in vain, and Kwanda was pronounced dead.

Ntombinkulu Mzanana, Kwanda’s relative, recounted the heart-wrenching ordeal, highlighting that Kwanda had received the fatal packet of chips from the shopkeeper at a nearby spaza shop. This shopkeeper initially denied any knowledge of Kwanda’s visit but later admitted to giving him the chips.

The community has since called for justice and answers, fearing that the chips might have been expired or counterfeit, which could endanger other children. The family awaits post-mortem results to confirm the cause of Kwanda’s death.

In a show of support and respect for the grieving family, members of Mamas Forum and residents temporarily closed the spaza shop pending further investigation.

This tragic incident follows other similar cases in the area, including the deaths of Neo Khang and Leon Jele in Naledi, where families are also awaiting post-mortem results. Additionally, the Department of Health confirmed the deaths of two more children in the West Rand, believed to be linked to snacks purchased from a nearby taxi rank. The community remains on edge as they seek answers and justice in these unsettling cases.
