Protea Glen Mall – e-hailing cab torched in disturbing incident

Protea Glen Mall was the scene of another disturbing incident on Monday evening when perpetrators torched a car, adding to the ongoing battle between minibus taxi drivers and e-hailing operators in the area.

According to police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the car was parked at Protea Glen Mall when three unidentified individuals armed with firearms approached the driver. The assailants allegedly ordered the victim out of the vehicle before setting it ablaze. The criminals also stole the victim’s cell phone. There have been no arrests, and investigations are ongoing, as per Jacaranda FM.

Last week, three vehicles were also set on fire at Maponya Mall, further exacerbating tensions between minibus taxi drivers and e-hailing operators.

Johannesburg MMC for Transport Kenny Kunene will meet with station commanders from all police stations in Soweto and representatives from Maponya Mall to ease the situation. The meeting aims to find ways to end the conflicts and restore peace and order in the area.
