President Ramaphosa made more promises

President Ramaphosa made more promises during his address to thousands of ANC members gathered in Soweto for the party’s 2019 election manifesto review at Dobsonville Stadium over the weekend.

President Ramaphosa provided an overview of the party’s progress and challenges in implementing the 2019 manifesto.

The organisers designed the event to “reflect and provide guidance on the party’s priorities” as it prepares for the 2024 elections.

Ramaphosa began his speech by speaking about the past 30 years. He commended the ANC’s strides in improving citizens’ lives.

He emphasised the government’s role in introducing and developing policies, laws, and programs. “Today, millions of people have access to housing, electricity, water, and other basic necessities that were once unavailable to them,” he stated.

President Ramaphosa acknowledged the setbacks caused by COVID-19, which resulted in the loss of 2 million jobs, unrest in Gauteng and KZN, floods, and the conflict in Ukraine and Russia. Nevertheless, he stressed the party’s relentless efforts to turn the tide.

President Ramaphosa pledged the government’s commitment to attracting more investments into the country and highlighted the recent BRICS summit as a critical approach to reviving the ailing economy. He also reiterated the government’s plans to end load shedding before the upcoming elections.

The commitments outlined in the 2019 manifesto covered seven key areas, including advancing social transformation, fighting corruption, promoting integrity, and strengthening government and public institutions.

Ramaphosa praised the government’s efforts in social transformation, particularly in building comprehensive housing for the poor and ensuring inclusive access to basic education for nearly 12 million children nationwide.

Regarding the fight against crime, the President mentioned that resources are strengthening the government’s capacity to combat crime. He assured the nation that actual results would become evident.

“We have been arresting thousands of people through operations such as Shanela, and we are aware of the challenges Gauteng is facing with illegal mining. We will collaborate with security forces to address this issue,” he affirmed.

President Ramaphosa also indicated that the government would undertake a process to assess the status of foreign nationals in the country, distinguishing those with relevant documentation from those without.

The event marks the beginning of a comprehensive two-month nationwide public tour across South Africa, which will further reflect on the 2019 election manifesto.
