In a poignant gathering of faith-based organisations, prayers will occur today at the Eagles Christian Centre in Newlands, Johannesburg, where Pastor Dwayne Gordon tragically lost his life during a church service.

SABC News reports that the solemn event follows a horrifying incident in which armed assailants stormed the church during the service, resulting in the fatal shooting of Pastor Dwayne Gordon and injuring three other individuals. The assailants also robbed congregants of their personal belongings, leaving the community in shock and anguish.

Among the injured is 39-year-old Sebastian Mosale, husband of Faranaaz Mosale, who expressed profound fear and distress, saying, “It’s terrible, I never knew. I always heard of the shootings and stuff. But Friday when I saw it happening in front of me, it got close to home.”

The tragic incident highlights the ongoing issue of violent crime, including murders, in Gauteng, leaving communities in constant fear. Colleen Makhubele, the City of Johannesburg Council Speaker, has strongly condemned this state of affairs and called for decisive action from the authorities.

A search is underway to apprehend the six suspects responsible for this heinous act, with Makhubele urging the Minister of Police to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
