Tshwane Hit by Series of Power Outages
Tshwane, the capital city of South Africa, faced a string of power outages that left most parts of the metro in darkness on Thursday afternoon.
Spokesperson Selby Bokaba revealed that the initial outage occurred at lunchtime due to a tripped 132kV line at the Bellom Substation, triggered by the explosion of a red-phase cable arrestor.
Impact on Affected Areas
- Skinner Street, River, and Edmond substations were also affected
- Areas left without power included the CBD, Union Buildings, Arcadia, Sunnyside, Hatfield, Steve Biko Hospital, and more
Efforts to Restore Power
- Technicians were promptly dispatched, and power supply was eventually restored the following morning
- During repairs at the Bellom Substation, another explosion occurred at the Kwagga Infeed Substation
- Technicians were mobilized to address the issue, completing repairs by 03:00
