Possible cholera outbreak in Gauteng townships

Published

on

10 Cholera cases, including one death, have been recorded in Gauteng Province since February, raising concerns about a more significant outbreak in townships such as Alexandra and Diepsloot. The cases are indigenous and have been linked to exposure to or consumption of untreated water from the Jukskei and Klip rivers, which are sources of Cholera as reported by The South African.

Poor infrastructure and pit latrines in these areas increase the risk of large outbreaks, as sewage can contaminate water sources during rains.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases is investigating the outbreak.
