Akani Properties, the management company overseeing the Winifred Mandela Precinct, formerly known as Nicolway Shopping Centre, has announced the implementation of heightened security measures in preparation for the upcoming festive season.

This decision comes in response to a recent armed robbery that took place at the Bryanston Jewellers store on September 30.

Zamani Letjane, the Chairperson of Akani Group, stated that an armed response unit, armed with automatic weapons, will be stationed permanently near the precinct to promptly address any suspected criminal activity, thereby enhancing security.

“We express gratitude to our response unit, which acted swiftly to prevent any loss of life and further property damage during the incident,” mentioned Letjane. He emphasized, “The safety and well-being of our tenants and patrons remain our utmost priority.”

Letjane also highlighted that incidents of crime and theft tend to escalate during the festive season, with retail establishments often becoming attractive targets for criminals. He noted ongoing police investigations into the robbery.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the provincial police spokesperson for Gauteng, confirmed that an unidentified group of armed individuals conducted a gunpoint robbery at a jewellery store in Bryanston. Nevhuhulwi urged individuals with relevant information to come forward to aid the police investigation in Randburg, where a case of business robbery is being probed.

“The armed men entered the store around 14:00, broke glass displays, and stole jewellery. Gunshots were reportedly fired by the suspects before they fled the scene in a red Nissan and grey Hyundai sedan. No injuries resulting from the gunshots have been reported, and the suspects remain at large,” Nevhuhulwi stated.
