Police have arrested 43 foreign nationals in Riverlea

Police have arrested 43 foreign nationals in Riverlea for various crimes since Tuesday, following the deployment of the police’s Special Task Force in response to the death of five illegal miners near the Zamimpilo informal settlement on Sunday. As per SABC News, the fatalities were attributed to an alleged turf war between rival illegal miners, prompting Police Minister Bheki Cele to visit the area and promise to deploy the task force.

Riverlea has seen a surge in violent criminal activity due to illegal mining operations in the area. Gauteng Police Spokesperson Brenda Muridili reported that the specialised forces deployed have made arrests for undocumented immigration, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, common assault, and control of suspected stolen property. The police operation will continue until officers stabilise the illegal mining activities.
