Police Arrest Suspected Airport thief in Johannesburg

Authorities in Johannesburg have arrested a 31-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a series of airport robberies. The suspect, who is thought to be a member of a local gang, was apprehended in the suburb of Houghton over the weekend as reported by News24.

According to Xolani Fihla, a spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, undercover officers from the reaction unit were patrolling the CBD on Saturday when they received a tip-off about a white BMW that had been used in an armed robbery in the affluent suburb of Bryanston. The vehicle was reportedly seen in the nearby suburb of Yeoville.
The officers tracked down the car and intercepted it on Houghton Drive and St Patrick Road, where they arrested the suspect. He was taken into custody at the Hillbrow police station.

The arrest follows a spate of robberies at OR Tambo International Airport and other airports around the country. Police have been working to crack down on the gangs responsible for the thefts, which have targeted both local and international travellers.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon on charges related to armed robbery and other offenses. Police say they are continuing to investigate the case and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
