Here’s Where You Can Apply for Your Passport and Smart ID at Banks in South Africa

Published

on

South Africans no longer need to endure long queues and system outages at Home Affairs offices to renew their passports or apply for smart IDs. Thanks to the eHome Affairs system, select bank branches now provide these services, making the process faster, simpler, and more convenient.

Currently, 30 bank branches across the country offer passport and smart ID services, with plans to expand to 64 locations in the near future.

How Does It Work?

The process is simple and completely paperless:

  1. Apply Online: Use the eHome Affairs website to submit your details and book an appointment at a participating bank branch.
  2. Visit the Bank: Attend your appointment, where your biometric data (photo and fingerprints) will be captured.
  3. Collect Your Document: Once your passport or smart ID is ready, you’ll receive a notification to collect it from the same branch.

Future Expansion

Plans are underway to add more branches:

  • FNB: 18 new locations.
  • Absa: 12 branches ready for activation.
  • Discovery Bank: Adding branches in Cape Town, Pretoria, and Durban.
  • Nedbank: Expansion details pending confirmation.

Limitations

The service is not yet available in all provinces. Currently, it is limited to Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal. Unfortunately, residents in Free State and North West still need to visit traditional Home Affairs offices.

Why Use eHome Affairs?

  • Convenience: Avoid long queues and poor customer service.
  • Efficiency: Biometric data and document collection handled at the bank.
  • Speed: Faster processing and collection times.
