Parents of Reeva Steenkamp Won't Contest Pistorius' Parole Application

Tania Koen, the lawyer representing Reeva Steenkamp’s parents, has communicated that her clients will not oppose the recent court application by Oscar Pistorius, the convicted murderer. This announcement comes in response to Pistorius’ latest attempt to secure parole, a move that involves approaching the Constitutional Court as reported by the SABC News.

Oscar Pistorius is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence for the murder of his then-girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a tragic incident that occurred in 2013. Reeva was fatally shot on Valentine’s Day, a heartbreaking event that has been a focal point of the case.

Pistorius had previously asserted that he mistook Reeva for an intruder, an argument that played a significant role in his defence during the trial.

In a significant development earlier this year, Pistorius’ parole application was denied in March.

Tania Koen, the legal representative for the Steenkamp family, emphasised that her clients find no reason to oppose Pistorius’ current application to the Constitutional Court. Instead, they are focusing on honouring Reeva Steenkamp’s memory on what would have been her 40th birthday, falling on Saturday, the 19th of August.

Koen confirmed that she had received Oscar Pistorius’ application to the Constitutional Court and served as the attorney officially representing Barry and June Steenkamp. She clarified their decision to abstain from contesting the application. She underlined the family’s intention to dedicate their energy to commemorating Reeva’s birthday, a sentiment that underscores their enduring respect for her memory.
