A recent surge in overnight ATM bombings in Eikenhof and the surrounding areas has raised serious concerns among law enforcement and the local community.

The precinct has witnessed a significant increase in overnight ATM bombings, with various ATMs in Eikenhof and its vicinity becoming targets for criminals.

Mike Fontes, the chairperson of the Mondeor CPF, reported that on October 18, at approximately 02:00, a group of 12 men attempted to target an ATM at the Mulbarton Shell on True North Road. During the attempted robbery, several shots were fired, but the criminals failed to access the ATM. They quickly fled the scene and escaped in a taxi on Kliprivier Drive.

Fontes highlighted the modus operandi of these ATM bombings, stating that they primarily occur in and around Swartkoppies Drive. The perpetrators are known to be heavily armed and are willing to engage in shootouts with armed reaction teams and the South African Police Service (SAPS). There are suspicions that these incidents may be linked to illegal mining activities, known as zama zama, near Swartkoppies Drive.

Fontes warned the public, advising them not to approach the scene if they encounter an ATM bombing in progress. Instead, he urged them to call SAPS and observe from a safe distance.

Lieutenant Colonel Mawela Masondo, the SAPS provincial spokesperson, revealed that Gauteng has witnessed a recent increase in ATM bombings. Major General Tommy Mthombeni, the deputy provincial commissioner for policing in Gauteng, has instructed the police to enhance patrols and visibility around ATM locations.

ATM bombings have increased, particularly in the southern parts of Johannesburg. The suspects involved in the Eikenhof incident escaped on foot through the river banks. Masondo appealed to petrol station employees and the community to report suspicious individuals to the nearest police station immediately.
