NPO RySky and Local Businesses Distribute 11,000 Meals to Those in Need

In a joint effort with various businesses and organisations, the NPO RySky has significantly impacted by donating over 11,000 meals to needy individuals. These generous contributions were collected in July and August, thanks to the support of Greenstone Shopping Centre, House of Style Models, Compass Care Centre, Grasses and Greens, AGT Foods Africa, and Doorways to Dignity.

Annamaria Lechki, the founder of RySky, emphasised that the RySky/KCCC Foundation Jars of Hope initiative is an ongoing community service project to ensure food security. While the project operates continuously, it gained special recognition on Mandela Day when jars were filled with essential food items. Each jar contained ingredients such as rice, lentils, soup mix, stock cubes, and a packet of soup mix, possibly adding pasta, split peas, soya, spices, herbs, or a can of vegetables if additional donations were received.

These jars are designed to provide sustenance for four people, and they were distributed in various locations, including Edenvale, Germiston, Benoni, Boksburg, Florida, Eldorado Park Ext 3, and Riverlea. The recipients of these meals included:

  • Hospice care centres.
  • Early childhood development centres.
  • Gender-based violence centres.
  • Substance abuse rehabilitation centers.
  • Feeding schemes.
  • Welfare organisations.

The project primarily benefits single parents, child-headed households, and job seekers in these communities.

Annamaria Lechki stressed that while the meals were distributed, the project remains an ongoing food security initiative. The NPO actively encourages upcycling by storing the ingredients in plastic food storage containers for ease of use. Additionally, zip-lock bags are used to maintain freshness when storing ingredients in centres with access to freezers.

RySky continues to engage in multiple community projects, such as hosting bi-monthly baby showers and providing daily meals to 800 community members. They also recently conducted a Woman’s Month drive, blessing 1,000 women as part of the celebration. Furthermore, RySky has initiated its Christmas collection drive, collecting school shoes, school bags, and lunch boxes for needy children.
