Early Childhood Development (ECD) educators at Boitshoko Day Care in Eersterust and Hammanskraal in the north of Pretoria received life-saving training to strengthen fire safety measures at daycare centres.

The workshop for the 20 educators was held in partnership with the Tshwane metro emergency services department.

Shabalala said the workshop aided in strengthening their knowledge and skills to address fire threats at the centres.

“Practical exercises included using fire extinguishers, identifying assembly points, drawing evacuation plans, and crawling low under smoke,” said Shabalala.

She said the Working on Fire-Kishugu Venture is committed to raising fire safety awareness and is targeting ECD centres so educators are equipped with skills to mitigate the impact of fires.

According to Shabalala, fire remains a daily threat to many who lack the knowledge to deal with it.

“The fire awareness cluster has been doing good work to empower educators with knowledge on fire safety.

“This goes a long way to save the lives of educators and learners. The educators would know how to respond to fire incidents.”

Educator, Fortunate Ngwenya, said she would teach her learners fire safety tips and exercises.
