Newest Tender Scam Circulating
The Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) has warned residents and businesses about a tender scam currently circulating across the country. The scam involves individuals being tricked into depositing funds to fraudulent suppliers of goods.

According to RWCLM spokesperson Phillip Montshiwa, scammers target unsuspecting suppliers nationwide by falsely claiming that RWCLM is soliciting bids for specific goods or products. The scammers send fake Request For Quotation (RFQ) documents to the targeted suppliers, often bearing the RWCLM logo. These RFQs are sometimes posted on suspicious websites online.
Scammers request quotations for safety equipment like safety boots and reflector jackets in one scenario. Once a supplier submits a bid, they receive contact from individuals posing as RWCLM officials. These scammers inform the suppliers that their companies have been selected to deliver goods urgently and ask them to sign and return an appointment letter. Additionally, the scammers pressure suppliers to use certain manufacturers, who are also part of the scam.
RWCLM’s investigation revealed that victims are instructed to pay these fictitious manufacturers, who then disappear with the funds.
Montshiwa urged the public to only deliver goods or make payments to supposed suppliers after verifying the orders’ authenticity with the municipality or their Supply Chain Management (SCM) office.
To report instances of tender fraud, corruption, or irregularities, individuals can contact the municipal offices at 010 496 5568 or email [email protected] in the office of the municipal manager. Suppliers looking to verify the authenticity of RWCLM orders can reach out to SCM at 010 496 5636/7123/7122.
