Newcastle law enforcement catch dangerous criminals

Two fugitive wanted criminals found themselves in the crosshairs of Newcastle law enforcement as they attempted to evade justice this past weekend. The Newcastle Crime Fighters Task Team captured the suspects following a determined operation.

Imran Ghafoor, a task team member, disclosed that the two suspects were implicated in an armed robbery at a liquor store in Vosloorus, Gauteng, on July 21. Responding to the store’s distress call, Gauteng police engaged the suspects in a shootout. Tragically, an officer lost his life during the exchange.

The initial incident involved around ten suspects who managed to evade apprehension. But the police were able to track down some of them. This tracking led to a shootout. One suspect died, and officers arrested two others.

Subsequently, a tip led Newcastle law enforcement to the Amajuba District. It was there they believed two suspects to be hiding. The officers launched an intelligence-driven operation on Saturday, August 19.

One suspect was captured and taken into custody in Utrecht during the operation. Officers apprehended the second suspect in Osizweni. In addition to the arrests, law enforcement recovered a 9mm Norinco Star firearm, eight live rounds of ammunition, one magazine, and two spent 9mm cartridges.

Ghafoor stated, “The suspects were charged with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and they were successfully linked to the Vosloorus case and will be handed over to the Gauteng Hawks for further investigation.”

He expressed gratitude to various agencies involved in the operation, including the Newcastle K9 Unit, Newcastle POP, Utrecht SAPS, off-duty officer, Warrant Officer Singh of Madadeni CSC, Newcastle Crime Fighters Task Team, Optimus Protection Services, and the Anti-Hijacking Unit.

Ghafoor concluded with a strong message, asserting that the Amajuba District is resolute in its stance against criminal activity. “We can proudly say that Amajuba District is a ‘No Go’ zone when it comes to crime!”
