Nelson Mandela Bridge is to close for maintenance

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said that Johannesburg’s Nelson Mandela Bridge is to close for maintenance purposes by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA). According to SAPeople, the bridge’s maintenance and cleaning will occur between Tuesday the 18th and Thursday the 20th of July 2023, from 09h00 to 15h00. It will affect traffic travelling between Braamfontein and Newtown.

The bridge will be accessible to pedestrians only during this period. It will be closed off to traffic at certain intersections. JMPD officers will be present to assist with regulating traffic in the area. Motorists must use the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and the Biccard Street Bridge as alternative routes.

The Nelson Mandela Bridge, completed in 2003 for R38 million, is the fourth of five bridges crossing the railway lines and sidings just west of Johannesburg Park Station. The South African Institute of Civil Engineers recognised it as an outstanding civil engineering achievement, according to South African Tourism.
