Audrey Hale killed six people on 28 March 2023, including three children aged nine and three staff members. As reported by PBS NewsHour, Hale was a former student at The Covenant School in Nashville. The shooter legally purchased seven guns recently and concealed them from their parents before carrying out the attack.

Hale had a detailed map of the school, conducted surveillance of the building, and targeted “this school, this church building”. Police said Hale was under a doctor’s care for an undisclosed emotional disorder. Hale did not have a previous criminal record. There is no known motive for the attack. Still, investigators believed Hale probably had “some resentment for having to go to that school”.

Hale legally bought the firearms from five local gun stores. Tennessee has no “red flag” law to allow police to intervene in such cases. Hale’s parents thought their child had sold one gun and did not own any others. However, Hale had hidden several weapons in the house.

Police released videos, including edited surveillance footage that reveals the shooter’s car driving up to the school, shooting out glass doors, and ducking through one of them. In addition, the police identified Rex Engelbert and Michael Collazo as the officers who fatally shot Hale, who had opened fire on them.

No police officers were at or stationed at the school at the time of the crime because it is a church-run school.
