Yesterday’s Chaos – N12 in Johannesburg Temporarily Closed as Fiery Fuel Tanker Disrupts Traffic
Johannesburg, [25 September 2023] – Commuters in Johannesburg were caught in a traffic nightmare yesterday. The N12 in Johannesburg south was closed due to a raging fuel tanker fire near the Xavier Street exit in Ridgeway. The incident led to a significant traffic disruption in the area, prompting the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) to issue motorist advisories.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed the presence of firefighters on the scene, working tirelessly to extinguish the blazing vehicle. Unfortunately, the situation led to the closure of all lanes on the N12 East freeway.

To mitigate traffic congestion, JMPD freeway officers directed vehicles towards the M1 North via Uncle Charlie’s Interchange to maintain traffic flow and ensure safety for all road users.
Motorists experienced delays and considered seeking alternative routes for their journeys. The M1 North and Xavier Street in Robertsham were viable options.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fuel tanker fire. Further updates are expected.
