Former Tshwane Mayor Accused of Sexual Assault as Gauteng Cope Blames National Leaders
Following Dr Murunwa Makwarela’s resignation as Tshwane mayor, the Congress of the People (Cope) has exposed further accusations of sexual assault against him. According to The Citizen, Cope’s Gauteng leadership held a media briefing to discuss the matter, which arose after Makwarela allegedly used a fraudulent certificate to undo his removal as mayor.
The Pretoria High Court confirmed that it never issued a rehabilitation insolvency certificate to Makwarela, who had been declared insolvent in 2016.
Cope, provincial chairperson Tom Mofokeng accused party spokesperson Dennis Bloem and deputy president Willie Madisha of shielding Makwarela and interfering in various provinces.
Cope will hold disciplinary proceedings against Makwarela and recommends that national leaders file criminal charges.
The DA and its partners filed a fraud case last week, and Makwarela resigned. He denied any wrongdoing in his resignation letter.
