Motorists urged to shift from private vehicles to public transport
Gautrain and A Re Yeng Promote Public Transport as Efficient and Sustainable Option
Motorists in Johannesburg are being encouraged to consider using public transport as a more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly mode of travel. This message was conveyed by Gautrain spokesperson Albi Modise during an awareness campaign held to mark Transport Month.
Collaborative Awareness Campaign
- The awareness campaign was a joint effort between Gautrain and A Re Yeng bus service.
- It took place on October 11 at the corner of Lynnwood Road and Roper Street.
Modise highlighted the negative impacts of traffic congestion, such as increased travel time, stress for drivers, high fuel consumption, air and noise pollution, and economic decline in urban areas. He emphasized that public transport systems not only transport passengers efficiently but also help reduce road congestion and harmful emissions, contributing to a cleaner and greener environment.
CEO of Gautrain Management Agency, Tshepo Kgobe, mentioned the findings of an economic impact study commissioned in 2018. The study revealed that a single trip on the Gautrain saves an average of 2.8kg of carbon dioxide per passenger compared to private car use. Additionally, Gautrain commuters traveling between Johannesburg and Tshwane could save approximately seven hours and R1,300 per month on petrol and car maintenance costs.
Commitment to Sustainable Transport
- Gautrain remains committed to providing a world-class sustainable transport system.
- Collaboration with A Re Yeng and Rea Vaya aims to create a more integrated public transport network in the province.
During the event, the oversight committee chairperson, Brenden Govender, emphasized the financial benefits and environmental impact of choosing public transport. Pheko Letlonkane, group head for Road and Transport, urged private vehicle users to consider switching to public transport to save time, money, and reduce carbon emissions.
Letlonkane encouraged residents to support public transport initiatives like A Re Yeng to contribute to a cleaner and more connected city. He called on commuters to inspire others to join the movement towards a sustainable future for Tshwane.
