Mother sues for R27m over child’s brain damage

A Gauteng mother is pursuing damages of more than R27m from the Gauteng Department of Health for her child’s permanent brain damage following their birth nearly 13 years ago at a hospital in the region. The mother claims that the nursing staff and doctors were negligent in their duty to attend to her during labour and failed to monitor her and her unborn baby as reported by IOL.

The court ruled that the lack of monitoring during labour led to the baby’s brain damage and held the health authority fully liable for damages.

The amount to be awarded will be determined at a later stage.
