A South African mom is undertaking an incredible 1,600km journey across the country on a 59-year-old tractor to show her support for her daughter, who has been selected to compete in the 2023 Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) World Outdoor Championships.

Corné Els, a 50-year-old mother, is travelling from Krugersdorp to Cape Town on a 1964 Massey Ferguson 35 Diesel Deluxe tractor to raise funds for her 16-year-old daughter, Marconette, who will be representing South Africa in the upcoming TWIF World Outdoor Championships in Switzerland. The goal is to collect at least R100 per kilometre to support their cause.

Els began her courageous journey, braving the elements and navigating winding roads, with her trusted tractor making its first stop in Vaalbank, between Magaliesberg and Koster.

Her target is to reach Robertson by Saturday, 1 July. Els shared during a recent stop that, the tractor emitted some smoke, but she reassured everyone that it was nothing to worry about. “She’s not a modern tractor, so a little smoke is allowed. Besides, it’s just white smoke,” she explained.

According to Landbouweekblad, the tractor maintains an average speed of around 25kph. When Els arrived in Hartbeesfontein, the local community awaited her. In a heartwarming gesture, a group of tractor enthusiasts joined her on their vintage tractors for part of the journey. They even stopped at a Massey Ferguson dealer to ensure her tractor was in good shape for the next leg of the trip to Schweizer Reneke.

Fortunately, Els mentioned that Monday wasn’t too cold, and she expects the weather to remain pleasant in the coming days. However, she acknowledges that conditions may change as she approaches the Western Cape.
